My Path to Becoming a Dive Professional

by Aaron McAdie

My love for scuba diving began in September 2010 when I completed my Open Water course. Although the conditions on my course weren’t favourable, I was amazed at the amount of marine life I saw down at Cook Island and enjoyed the feeling of weightlessness as well as just being underwater. This love quickly grew and led to the completion of my Advanced Adventurer course over the 2010 Christmas and New Years period on a five day liveaboard trip to the Bunker Group. On the trip I was blown away with the diving on The Great Barrier Reef and was madly in love with the underwater world, so much so that Eirin and Colin picked up on my excitement and started to introduce the idea of becoming a dive professional. I was gone, hook, line and sinker and I signed up to do my Professional Program early in 2011.

As I got further into my training and reached the level of Master Diver, I felt much more competent in the water with my own skills. I learned how to manage my own stress levels, as well as gaining skills to prevent and respond to diving accidents. My knowledge and understanding of dive theory was taken to the next level with the Science of Diving course and the Dive Guide course. The training that was part of these courses were nothing like any of my pervious courses and I now feel the need to share my passion for diving with others.

Happy diving and I look forward to seeing you on a dive boat soon, who knows it might even be me leading your next dive.
